Australian businesses are set to benefit from the biggest internet speed upgrade in our history.

NBN Co’s Accelerate Great program, launched in September 2025, is rolling out dramatically faster speed tiers that promise to transform the way we work, collaborate, and connect.

This isn’t just a technical adjustment behind the scenes; for many businesses it’s the difference between waiting and working, between bottlenecks and breakthroughs.

NBN Internet Speed Boost - What It Means for Your Business

Why Faster Speeds Matter for Business

Today, almost every business process depends on reliable internet — whether it’s cloud platforms, video calls, large file transfers, or customer interactions.

When connections drag, productivity suffers. A frozen video call, a stalled upload, or sluggish cloud software can cost you time, money, and credibility. That’s why an internet connection isn’t just about numbers on a plan; it’s about helping businesses operate smoothly and compete confidently.

What's Changing?

From 14 September 2025, NBN has increased the wholesale speeds available to providers as well as increasing the maximum possible speed for some types of connections (Fibre-to-the-Premises and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial).

Some retail internet service providers (ISPs) are passing these upgrades on to customers with no action required, but for others you may need to switch plans or providers to get the most appropriate option for you.

Also, at the top end, a new higher speed tier (2000/500 Mbps) is available for some customers.

The Catch: It’s Not Automatic, It's Not Instant, and It's Not Everywhere

  • Rollout depends on your provider: They’re each enabling upgrades on different schedules.
  • Eligibility depends on technology: Only FTTP and HFC services qualify right now. If you connect using a different type of technology (FTTN, FTTC, or FTTB) you may qualify for a free fibre upgrade
  • Hardware matters: Older routers, network equipment with slower ethernet ports, or poor weak Wi-Fi setups can prevent you from taking advantage of faster speeds.
  • Speeds may differ during busy periods: Not all plans are equal, congestion and provider provisioning of their upstream network still plays an important role in the speed you actually experience.

Also: Don’t Forget SLAs

Speed is only one piece of the puzzle. For businesses, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) matter just as much:

📊 Guaranteed uptime

🛠️ Response targets for outages (e.g. 4 hours vs. 12 hours vs when-we-get-around-to-it)

💸 Compensation if targets aren’t met

The SLA tied to your account depends on the contract you sign with your provider, and some providers don’t offer a choice at all.

What else might a Small Business need to think about?

For most small and medium businesses, the newly boosted speed tiers provide plenty of bandwidth

However, typical home-user agreements aren’t suitable for businesses that require connectivity to keep their team productive and who use the internet most heavily during business hours.

The difference isn’t in raw speed, it’s in the added features that protect your operations:

📌 Static IP address — important for remote access, hosting, or some cloud services.

☎️ Priority support — faster access to technical help when things go wrong.

🕑 Extended support hours — coverage that goes beyond “residential hours,” reducing downtime risk.

⚡ Enhanced SLAs — stronger commitments from the provider on uptime and fault resolution on top of what NBN offers in relation to your connection.

These features are what you’re paying for when you choose a business-labelled plan and, even for smaller businesses, they’re worth the premium for peace of mind.
